Spring Racing is the closest thing Australia has to a red carpet for everyone. It’s the one season when a hat is not just acceptable but expected — and when the question “what are you wearing?” is asked weeks in advance.

Whether you’re headed to Randwick, Rosehill or flying south for Flemington, here’s how to get race day right.

Start with the dress code

Racing still has its traditions, and they’re part of the fun. Members’ enclosures and marquees often have stricter codes than the general lawn, so always check before you go. As a rule: elegant, polished, and never too short or too casual. Leave the thongs at home.

Dress for the members’ enclosure, even if you’re on the lawn.

Know your days

Some race days carry their own unwritten (and much-loved) rules:

  • Derby Day is traditionally black and white — our favourite palette, naturally.
  • Cup Day is the main event: bold colour, statement headwear, full glamour.
  • Oaks Day leans feminine — florals, soft colour and romantic silhouettes.
  • Stakes Day is relaxed and bright, a celebration of colour.

Wide brims and florals: two race day classics

Headwear: non-negotiable

A hat, headpiece or fascinator finishes the look and signals you understood the assignment. Wide brims feel timeless and give welcome shade; structured headbands and sculptural pieces feel modern. Choose one hero — if the hat is dramatic, keep the dress simpler, and vice versa.

The dress

Midi lengths are the racing sweet spot: elegant, practical on the lawn and appropriate everywhere. Think a beautifully cut shift, a romantic floral, a tailored jumpsuit or a crisp suit for something sharper. Labels like Zimmermann are made for race day, and they come through our doors often.

Shoes you can actually stand in

Stilettos and grass are not friends. Block heels, wedges and elegant flats will carry you from the first race to the last without sinking. Pack foldable flats in your bag for the journey home.

The Secondo secret: don’t buy new

Race wear is famously worn once. Which is exactly why our rails fill with exquisite occasion pieces every spring — many brand new with tags. Shop designer race day looks for a fraction of the price of buying new. Very chic, very circular.
